Vojna in mi(r) is a project of Hiša kulture v Pivki (House of culture in Pivka). It includes a graphic workshop, an exhibition of the works and the accompanying program for children. Hiša kulture v Pivki will open its graphic studio for the invited artists. They will participate on a 3-day workshop in woodcut, led by artist Leon Zuodar. The works will be presented in a group exhibition curated by Mojca Grmek. During the exhibition accompanying program for children will be organized under the guidance of painter and teacher Tanja Milharčič.
The title Vojna in mi(r) is a word pun in Slovene language and translates into two meanings that can’t be written together in the same way in English: War and Us/War and Peace. As the title suggests, the idea for the project refers to Tolstoy’s novel War and Peace, which talks about Russian society during the Napoleonic wars. Similarly, the project War and Us/War and Peace addresses the global problems of war and their impact on social life in the local environment, i.e. in Slovenia. The time frame of the project is determined by the impact of wars on the generation of 1975-95. This influence starts with World War II through the lives of our parents and grandparents and extends to the Cold War and the wars that followed the disintegration of Yugoslavia, to the wars in the Middle East today. The main theme of the project is a critical look at the impact of these wars on the social life in our country, from the standpoint of – as in Tolstoy’s novel – opposing to war and advocating of peace.

Vesna Bukovec: Exploanation
Exhibition: Vesna Bukovec: Eksploanacija / Exploanation (solo exhibition)
Venue: Alkatraz Gallery, Ljubljana, SI
Date: April 22 – May 13, 2016
Opening: April 22, 2016, at 8 pm
Curators: Ana Grobler, Sebastian Krawczyk, Jadranka Plut

Vesna Bukovec, Domoljubi / The Patriots, drawing, 2016; Caption on the drawing translates to: We are proud to hate!!!
“The artist received the impulse for the exhibition while observing responses to the migration crisis which has, in the media and the Internet space triggered a surge of negative emotions, often pointed toward the victims of the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of the recent years. A spectrum of negative reactions, articulated by the aid of hate speech has settled as a regular companion of press reports, chats in cafés and on social networks. There is an interesting fact about it – the mentioned discourse has emerged in the circles of the self-proclaimed patriots. While following the paradox (as love for the homeland was one of the crucial qualities to catalyze the uprising against the occupancy during the Second World War, as stressed by the author) the artist started to ask herself how it is possible that love for the nation can – in such a short time – turn into acts that bear witness of hatred toward others exactly in the name of patriotism? Is a demonized image of a stranger a necessary condition to establish a national community?”
…
“Vesna Bukovec has chosen resistance. Even the title of the exhibition, Exploanation, composed of the words exploitation and nation, provokes the thought that through the aid of the nation, intolerance and hatred towards Others are fomented.”

Crises and New Beginnings: Art in Slovenia 2005–2015
The exhibition aims to present a selective overview of developments just past or still taking place, and attempts to define the main phenomena and trends in contemporary art in Slovenia over the past decade. Covering a wide range of fields and thus also involving the collaboration of several professionals and experts, it is a sequel to the exhibition trilogy from ten years ago, which presented, over three consecutive years (2003 to 2005) the trends in Slovene art and related fields by decade, since 1975.
