VideoWall 2016: Vesna Bukovec

Vesna Bukovec, Okrožnica

Screening of a new video Okrožnica / Circular.

Video Okrožnica / Circular is a simple animation of spinning circle. A preloader is familiar to all computer and Internet users. The aim of the spinning circle animation is to inform the user that certain process is taking place in the background even though the result is not yet visible. If the circle is spinning for too long, we become nervous and even angry.

The endlessly spinning circle could be compared to the slowness of bureaucratic procedures and the powerlessness of those who are waiting. Continuous rotation is symbolizing the flow of time, as well as being caught in a loop.

The shape of the circle is the shape of the letter o. Inside the rotating circle the words starting with the letter o (in Slovene language) are appearing and disappearing. At first sight random words turns out to be related to life choices and situations of refugees and asylum seekers who are waiting for their application for international protection to be solved. Will their endless circle of waiting ever stop?

VideoWall is an open air video gallery, an ever-changing graffiti, with a new video loop being presented every two weeks. Each work is screened daily between 9 pm to 1 am in autumn and 6 pm to midnight in winter. The works are in line with the context of the street and open-air video gallery.

Authors who applied through an international call were selected by Pila Rusjan, video artist and author of the project, are Eriz Moreno, Metka Zupanič, Kika Nicolela, Yuliya Molina, Vesna Bukovec, Nez Pez & Marko Kolarič Gavez, Victor Paradinho and Lina Rica.

VideoWall is produced by famulVideoLab (KD Galerija GT), cofinanced by City of Ljubljana and supported by Galerija Hest. Executive producer is Polona Zupan / Pila Rusjan, her co-worker is Miha Kelemina.

The project brings an itinerant exhibition of contemporary art with the title The End of the New that is going to be organized for a year in various Italian towns as well as in Ljubljana and Zagreb throughout the years of 2016-2017. The exhibition is organized by the cultural association Neo from Udine to celebrate the twentieth year of its founding with an exhibition both the same and different in each of its venues, as suggested by its name neo (new), used to redefine contents and aspects of the visual arts starting from 1996. A single catalogue of 600 pages will be published in the autumn 2016. Partners from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia will host 16 exhibitions with 85 artists.

“The artworks pull the spectators into a theatre to attend a tragedy, experience it from a distance and contemplate the relations, patterns and stereotypes in real life. They are meant to break the hypnosis of everyday life ruled by the function of media, the means of communication and the economic and political relations. Without a hint of superiority towards the audience these artworks could act as simple old magic for staying sane. Some would call them activist, I prefer active.”

Excerpt from the text This art is active by Vasja Nagy.
To be published in the catalogue of the exhibition La fine del Nuovo / The End of the New in autumn 2016.

Uncurated exhibition as a protest against the planned demolition of Tovarna Rog (Rog Factory).

Saturday 25th of March 2006 marked the start of the initiative to open the abandoned bicycle factory Rog for temporary use, with the intent to carry out non-profit, non-established activities on its premises. It is not a classic occupation of space, but a temporary alteration of its purposes. The 7000 square meter large factory – owned by the City of Ljubljana (MOL) – has already been left to decay for 15 years. As long as MOL doesn’t develop and begin implementing a clear strategy to solve the problem of these empty premises, we self-initiatively wish to open it to all individuals and groups engaged in the non-profit sector, for the realization of independent production of cultural and social content.

Specifically for this exhibition I’ve made a new version of a drawing from the series Ali me nočete, ker sem kritična / Do you not want me, because I am critical:

bukovec-za-rog450

Text on the drawing: ROG is ours. Do you not want me, because I support independent scene.
