The theme of the festival’s 17th edition is ‘WE’.

‘We. Does this mean the We and the collective You, You and I, or is there also a They, and if so, who does that mean? Goricans, Slovenians, Europeans, Christians, atheists, revolutionaries, mothers, children, families of all types? Are the new arrivals also We, are We the ones staying or are We perhaps the ones departing? Are We those living here and now, or those who have ever lived and ever will? Who is it that we are? And who is it that we can be? Only humans? Are animals included in the concept of We? What about other creatures of the planet, are they also We? Even those that breathe with gills, or those that do not breathe at all? Does We include those beyond the stars, or are those They, or You? What do We have to say to each other?’

vabilo Vesna Bukovec: V iskanju svobode (Ecce homo)

One year ago writer Widad Tamimi invited me to draw illustrations to her stories of refugees. With the project we wanted to cast a light on the suffering of people migrating along the Balkan route, which also crosses our country, and help neutralizing the negative image of refugees and xenophobia spreading across local mediascape and social networks.
Stories were published weekly in online and print edition of Delo (newspaper in Slovene language) under the title ‘Begunec sem (I am a refugee)’ from January till April 2016. Since than the stories and illustrations have been presented in various exhibitions.

With the project of fine art portfolio I’ve decided to single out five illustrations (together with stories) and upgrade them to a large format silkscreen art prints.

Portfolio In Search of Freedom (Ecce Homo)
Printed by: Slavko Pavlin, Printmaking Studio (silkscreen and litography), MGLC International Centre of Graphic Arts Ljubljana
Edition: 10
Content of 1 portfolio: 5 fine art prints (silkscreen) + 6 paper sheets with texts (by Widad Tamimi, digital print)
Size of fine art prints: 50 x 70 cm
The portfoilo folder is an original handwork (by Dejan Koban and Vesna Bukovec)

About the project:

The exhibition is a selection of 8 established artists from Slovenia and Austria that have already achieved recognition by national and international art critics as well as appreciation by public. The artists belong to different generations and follow different approaches to artistic expression. It is a strong conscience about the bond between (re)presentation and single and collective mind in society that connects work of these artists. They share some kind of an activist attitude which they use in a delicate way; they are never aggressive or rude. They rather express themselves from a personal, sometimes directly from intimate space, and personally address spectator as a member of society or a single element in complexity of the universe.

Art in a Suitcase is a project and attitude of a curator who travels with artworks suitable for presentations in various forms. Sometimes they break rules of traditional aesthetic values but still follow the rules accepted by the contemporary art world in general. Artworks have in the history always been a medium for handing over some kind of message; some kind of containers, physical manifestations of ideas. The form of an artwork fits its content and technique in which it is executed is sometimes merely aesthetic issue, other times is a symbolic expression in a same way like other symbols like colours, shapes or compositions. Content can be sometimes easy to decipher but mostly is fully comprehensible only through a contemplation and study. The position of a curator between an artwork in the audience is to take care that the ideas move in both ways i.e. the artworks reach the audience and audience finds a place for artworks in their lives. A curator can offer a simple or complex explanation or present one possible interpretation that triggers the imagination to search for own way to unpack the artwork like would one unpack a suitcase to reach for its content.
