Group exhibition

8 May – 10 June 2018
Likovni salon Gallery, Trg celjskih knezov 9, Celje

Participating: Ana Čigon / Saša Spačal / Ida Hiršenfelder, Lenka Đorojević / Matej Stupica, Tomaž Furlan, IvAn (Iva Tratnik in Andreja Džakušič), Neža Knez, Polonca Lovšin, Sašo Sedlaček.

The artworks at the multimedia group exhibition, in different ways and in a mutual dialogue, point to the structural asymmetry within the social division of work. They activate the possibilities for change with an emphasis on self-organisation, offering means of empowerment through humorous suggestions.

Vesna Bukovec, Briga me … / I am not bothered …, drawings on a paper roll, detail 2018

I am not bothered with the end of the world (Briga me za konec sveta) is the title of the exhibition featuring works by Vesna Bukovec. In the selected works to be seen at the Simulaker Gallery, the author presents a critical view of the militant attitude of political systems to migrants, the tragic attitude of the individual to the fellow human in need of help, the populism, i.e. “Fake-news” and hate speech. Some graphic prints and drawings at the exhibition are a clear response to the current developments in the Western world, linked to the refugee crisis and political and social protests over the past two years (In search of freedom (Ecce homo)ExploinationNot im my name etc.) and to recent election of the president of the United States (Democracy Today).

Already with the title I am not bothered with the end of the world, the exhibition addresses us individuals who create a modern society, and through the selection of past and new works of art Vesna Bukovec raises questions about the visions of contemporary society: questions about (non)humanity, harmony, empathy, acceptance of the other, diligence, questions about one’s own political role, hatred, poverty, despair, disparities.

About the exhibition

In Search of a Lost Aura is a contemporary art exhibition about the visual injunction we are forced to face in this second modernity we are living in. An exhibition that goes from sixties until now, with 70 works of art of accomplished as much as unknown and emergent artists. Works that analyze the topic of the screen-facade, of the representation and negotiation of the look between subject and other. A mediation that passes through the screen – Alice in Wonderland – of the media, always more intelligent and independent. A device that we used to use to address others, and that now is turned inside out. A screen that, instead of building relations, incarcerates inside a web. A world wide web that bounded the entire planet. Since we live in a present always more rapid, timeless, made of wide spaces and narrow moments, the resetting of time and duration has completely transformed the anthropological meaning of human relations, the surround and other’s perception. The title of the exhibition and its contents ambiguously recall this new proustian or Spilbergian temporality, combined with the concept of aura expressed by Walter Benjamin in its 1936’s essay; its loss and, nowadays, its reconstruction, or new virginity, in the digital era. From Andy Warhol to Alberto Vidissoni, like from everybody to anybody. A mental map inside a cultural and political geography, for many still to be explored.
